Battle Cry of Freedom by Jack Martin
In this second of Jack Martin’s Civil War mystery series featuring General Grant’s erstwhile sleuth, Alphonso Clay is once again charged with rooting out those who would destroy the Union and its efforts to keep the the State united.
This time, Alphonso has not only a host of rebels to content with, but a beautiful Irish assassin, whose orders are to observe and report on the winds of war to her wealthy client whose interest in the outcome of the Civil War are tied to the stock market . But when she begins to use her considerable talents to tilt the outcome to her own liking, she also falls under the penetrating gaze of Alphonso Clay. I especially liked that the woman assassin and Alphonso had all the attraction of two opposing magnets. They are both at odds with their humanity as they’re both branded as cold blooded killers. I was very satisfied to finish the book and realize that the real killer was summarily brought to justice in a very special way. Not to spoil the ending, but let me just say that ears are for more than hearing! Can’t wait for the next Alphonso Clay mystery.
